Biodiversity net gain in the UK
Convenor – Professor David Hill CBE, Chairman, Environment Bank
Panellists:
- Dr Joseph Bull, Associate Professor in Climate Change Biology, Oxford University
- Sarah Mukherjee, Chief Executive Officer, IEMA
- Dr Grace O’Donovan, Broadview Ecological Consultants
The principle of biodiversity net gain, whereby most developments will need to demonstrate a minimum 10% uplift in biodiversity through on or off site measures, is now enshrined in UK legislation. The Panel will examine how the current DEFRA biodiversity metric assists in implementation of the net gain principle and how both the metric and principle may evolve in light of experience to date. The Panel will open up discussion as to how awareness and implementation of the net gain principle can contribute towards broader biodiversity conservation objectives and targets.
